GPA Calculator

Calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA) on the standard 4.0 scale based on your grades and credit hours.

How GPA Is Calculated

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours.

Formula: GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours

Quality points for each course = Grade Points × Credit Hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12.0 quality points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course earns 13.2 quality points.

Sum all quality points and divide by total credits to get your GPA.

Grade Point Scale

The standard 4.0 scale used by most US colleges and universities:

  • A+ / A: 4.0 (Excellent)
  • A-: 3.7
  • B+: 3.3
  • B: 3.0 (Good)
  • B-: 2.7
  • C+: 2.3
  • C: 2.0 (Average)
  • C-: 1.7
  • D+: 1.3
  • D: 1.0 (Below Average)
  • D-: 0.7
  • F: 0.0 (Failing)

Some schools don't use plus/minus grades. Some give A+ a value of 4.3. Check your institution's specific scale.

GPA Benchmarks

Here are common GPA thresholds and what they mean:

  • 3.7-4.0: Summa cum laude / Dean's List at most schools. Competitive for top graduate programs.
  • 3.5-3.69: Magna cum laude range. Strong for graduate school applications.
  • 3.0-3.49: Cum laude range. Meets requirements for most graduate programs.
  • 2.5-2.99: Average. Minimum for some graduate programs and employers.
  • 2.0-2.49: Below average. Minimum to graduate at most schools.
  • Below 2.0: Academic probation at most institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA is calculated using only courses from one semester. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all semesters. This calculator can compute either — enter just one semester's courses for a semester GPA, or all courses for cumulative.
Do all colleges use the same GPA scale?
Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale, but specifics vary. Some don't use plus/minus grades (so there's no A- or B+). Some weight honors or AP courses higher (e.g., an A in an honors course might be 4.5). International schools often use entirely different systems.
Can I calculate GPA with more than 5 courses?
This calculator supports up to 5 courses. For more courses, calculate in batches: note the total quality points and total credits from each batch, then divide the overall total quality points by the overall total credits for your cumulative GPA.
How can I raise my GPA?
The most effective strategies: take courses where you can earn higher grades, retake courses where you received low grades (if your school replaces the grade), take more credit hours of courses you excel in, and seek tutoring or study groups for challenging courses. The impact of a single course on your GPA decreases as you accumulate more credit hours.
