Understanding Your Salary

Salary can be expressed in different pay periods, which can make it hard to compare job offers or budget effectively. This calculator converts between all common pay periods:

  • Annual: Your total yearly pay before taxes.
  • Monthly: Annual salary divided by 12.
  • Biweekly: Annual salary divided by 26 (every two weeks).
  • Weekly: Annual salary divided by 52.
  • Hourly: Annual salary divided by (hours per week × 52).

Note: Biweekly pay results in 26 paychecks per year, not 24. This means two months per year you receive three paychecks instead of two — a useful budgeting detail many people overlook.

Estimating Your Tax Rate

Your effective tax rate depends on your income, filing status, state, and deductions. Here are rough guidelines for US workers:

  • $30,000-$50,000: 15-20% effective rate
  • $50,000-$80,000: 20-25% effective rate
  • $80,000-$120,000: 25-30% effective rate
  • $120,000-$200,000: 28-33% effective rate
  • $200,000+: 30-37% effective rate

Salary vs. Hourly: Which Is Better?

Salaried employees typically receive benefits (health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off) that add 20-30% to the value of their compensation. An hourly worker earning $30/hour ($62,400/year) may actually earn less than a salaried employee at $55,000 who receives $15,000 in benefits.

However, hourly employees are entitled to overtime pay (1.5x rate) for hours over 40/week under the FLSA, while many salaried employees are "exempt" from overtime. If you regularly work 50+ hours, hourly pay with overtime can exceed an equivalent salary.
